Police Warning People To Look Out For ADT Imposters

By Tony McNary, CBS Atlanta Reporter

WOODSTOCK, Ga. -- Matt Cargle has an ADT alarm system, but now he's cautious about who he lets inside his home wearing an ADT shirt."Two days ago, I was notified via Twitter to watch out for two people posing as ADT salesmen going door-to-door seeing if people wanted alarm systems," said Cargle.Cargle lives in the Park at Kingsgate subdivision in Woodstock.

ADT_ImpostersPolice said over the past couple of weeks, a man and woman posing as ADT sales representatives have gone to homes pretending to sell security systems."At this point, our biggest fear is maybe they are basically casing homes to look and see if there is an animal in the home. Is there a security system that is actually in force and working in the home. Basically checking what might be a burglary target," said Woodstock police Sgt. Paul Brown.Brown said the pair has gone to homes in three Woodstock subdivisions. He also has reports of similar incidents that happened in Norcross, Holly Springs and Alpharetta.Investigators said ADT is aware of the impostors."They informed us that they do in fact have people soliciting in the metro Atlanta area, but they assured us these individuals would have proper credentials and ID upon demand and would also be visible," said Brown.Cargle said he's glad the word is getting out. He and his neighbors will be looking out for the fake ADT reps."I'm really happy the news is behind this to make people aware of their surroundings and to watch out for things like this," said Cargle.Police said the fake ADT reps were last seen driving a four-door white car.

NorthStar Security wants you to know that you should never let a door to door salesperson into your home based on their word that they work for an alarm company.  You should always ask for a main office number and verify that with the secretary of state.  If you are interested in their services you can request information and call their office to schedule an appointment.

There are legitimate companies out there that use "door knocking" as a sales technique, but you should be wary of this sales tactic because you will almost always find that this is used with other high pressure sales methods designed to "close the deal".  Like any other service, you will always come out better if you evaluate providers based on your specific needs and at your convenience.  If a sales consultant from a legitimate company knocks on your door they will be happy to give your their office contact and company information so that you can research their services.  You can request an appointment with a NorthStar Security consultant here.
